When to start wearing maternity clothes is always one of the biggest dilemmas for mums-to-be. Am I really showing? and Will I look funny? are the main questions we ask ourselves, but finding clothes that fit well is essential to feeling good during pregnancy.

Start by checking out your wardrobe for the items that you may be able to wear as your tummy starts to grow. Stretchy materials and loose fitting clothes are a good start. Look for empire waist dresses and tops that may be able to accommodate a growing bump for the first few weeks. Yoga pants, long vests, cardigans, wrap dresses, leggings and tunics are all possibilities for early maternity wear.

When you can no longer button up your jeans you can buy a belly band (a stretchy band that can keep your pants up while unbuttoned) and these are also good to use after you’ve had your baby when your maternity clothes are too big but your regular ones are still a little tight.

Maternity clothes are meant to fit from the time your regular clothes don’t, around 3-4 months for most women but it’s always best to go by how comfortable you feel in your regular clothes and once they start feeling uncomfortable or tight, it’s time to start shopping.
